Match reports

Pocklington Ladies Tennis is on a role this week and are going to be aforce to be reckoned with right across Driffield and York Leagues with 5 teams reporting victories.

The Ladies D team finally got off the starting blocks with a home fixture against seasiders Flamborough. It may have been the 5th week of the season but due to the combination of byes and bad weather, it was the team’s first home fixture. This week the sun shone and it was certainly worth the wait. The new pairing of Jane Pearson and Val Merrett was on top form, only losing one game all evening. The other pairing of the very experienced’ Granny’ Billington and Bridget Atkinson, youngster Victoria Bland with Janet Leach also won all their matches to give Pocklington a convincing 9-0 win.

This was matched by the Ladies C Team who  also had a 9-0 win against Driffield LTC.  In the captain‘s words “we thrashed 'em”.  The whole team only gave 11 games away with Louise Wilkinson and Ruth Sampson top couple, winning all of their sets by 8 games to 0.  They  had ‘an early bath’ all being back in the Clubhouse having supper by just after 8pm – must be a record!

The Ladies A  team had a 6-3 win away on Malton's grass courts with Claire Taylor/Carolyne Pearce and Helen Whilesmith/Liz Jones picking up 3 sets apiece.

The Ladies 1 in the Fulford League maintained their unbeaten record on Saturday with a convincing 70 games to 38 win over Appleton Roebuck. Rachel Bloom was complimented by her partner Mel Duncan on her good rallying. Liz Jones and Helen Whilesmith won 27 vital games and Ruth Hill and Rosanne Dane were dubbed "Jack Russells" by the opposition because of their aggressive play. They were the only couple not to lose a match. Hunger struck when it was biscuits only after the match when Pocklington had been looking forward to sandwiches and cake!

Pocklington Ladies 2 in the York League had an enjoyable local derby against Stamford Bridge on Saturday. Top couple, by one game, Hazel Rowe and Rachel Danby won all 3 rubbers, doing well to beat a strong Stamford Bridge first couple, while young Victoria Bland and experienced Tricia Davies plus Janet Leach and Jenny Wood managed two sets each, giving a convincing 79-29 victory to Pocklington. Its hardly exciting tennis in Division 6 but results like this should ensure promotion. Onwards and upwards girls!
